The ThreadPoint Institute is the research, publishing and public learning home of ThreadPoint. It explores how children, communities and public institutions come to understand the physical systems behind digital life: data centres, cloud computing, AI, networks, energy, land, people and place.

Most people use the internet every day without knowing where it lives, what it depends on, or how it shapes the places around them. The Institute exists to help close that gap: patiently, publicly, and in language everyone can use.

Infrastructure literacy is a foundation, not an add-on.
As digital systems become embedded in education, healthcare, work, public services and everyday communication, understanding them is no longer just a technical challenge. It is a social and educational one.
Children are growing up shaped by systems they are rarely taught to see. Communities are asked to live alongside, approve and trust infrastructure they have not been given the language to understand. And this matters most for the people least often invited into the conversation: girls, state school pupils, young people of colour, neurodivergent learners and communities underrepresented across technology and the built environment.
Infrastructure literacy makes those systems visible. It gives children, communities, educators, councils and policymakers a shared language for the infrastructure shaping everyday life, and a fair chance to question and shape it.

The Churchill Fellowship.
The Institute is led by Willow Williams CF, MSc: founder of ThreadPoint, author of Where the Internet Goes to Sleep, and a 2026 Churchill Fellow, with 15 years across information management, digital construction and live data centre projects in the UK and internationally.
Her Fellowship explores infrastructure literacy and public understanding of the physical systems behind AI, cloud computing and digital life, with international field research across five countries:

ThreadPoint's workshops in schools, libraries and community settings generate real insight: what children and families already know about the systems behind digital life, what surprises them, and what helps understanding stick. The Institute studies that evidence, publishes what it learns, and feeds it back into how ThreadPoint teaches, so the classroom work and the research make each other better.
The same evidence supports ThreadPoint's partners: councils, funders and infrastructure organisations receive reporting grounded in real measurement rather than reach counts, and the Institute's annual work gives the whole field something it has lacked: a public record of what infrastructure literacy looks like when it is actually built.
We believe some of the children in ThreadPoint workshops today will help shape tomorrow's infrastructure. The Institute's part is patient: making sure early curiosity is recognised and supported, so that every child, whatever their background, postcode or gender, has a fair chance to understand, question and one day shape the systems behind digital life.

The Institute learns from every session, and gives back to every one.
Independence. The Institute's research, writing and findings are produced independently by ThreadPoint. Partners and sponsors may fund research and reporting, under published independence terms, but never influence its questions, methods or conclusions.
Infrastructure literacy is not yet a widely recognised field. The ThreadPoint Institute is a long-term project: through research, writing, education and public engagement, we intend to help make it one.
